Český Krumlov day trip from Prague is one of those experiences that people talk about for years. Not because of a single landmark. Because of the feeling — the moment you walk into the Old Town and realise that this is not a reconstruction of a medieval town. It is the actual thing, preserved almost intact, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and still looking exactly the way it looked five centuries ago.
The town sits in a deep horseshoe bend of the Vltava River — the same river that flows under Charles Bridge in Prague — surrounded by forested hills in South Bohemia, approximately 160 kilometres from the capital. The castle towers above everything. The cobblestone streets wind between Renaissance and Baroque facades. And all around, life continues in one of the most extraordinary settings in Central Europe.
Český Krumlov Castle dates to around 1240 and is the second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic after Prague Castle. Across five courtyards and 40 buildings, it tells the story of the powerful dynasties that shaped Bohemia — above all the Rosenbergs, who ruled the town from the 13th to the 17th century and whose rose emblem still appears throughout the castle.
The castle tower, with its 162 steps, rises 86 metres above the level of the Vltava River. From the top the view is one of the most photographed in the country — the red-roofed medieval town below, the river looping around it, and the forested hills stretching to the horizon.
The bear moat between the first and second courtyard has been inhabited since 1707. The bear has been part of the castle's heraldry since the Rosenberg era — the tradition of keeping real bears began in the second half of the 16th century and continues to this day.
If you'd like to visit the castle interiors — the Baroque theatre, the Renaissance apartments, the Masquerade Hall — tickets can be purchased on site. Castle interiors are open April through October, Tuesday to Sunday. The castle grounds and exterior are accessible year-round.
Below the castle, the cobblestone streets of the Old Town thread between Renaissance townhouses, Baroque fountains and small squares that have barely changed in 500 years. The Church of St. Vitus. The main square, Náměstí Svornosti, with its plague column and traditional restaurants. Hidden courtyards, artisan shops and the sound of the river never far away.
We explore the town on foot with your guide, who brings the history of each building, each family and each era to life — including the stories that don't make it into the guidebooks. The tour includes free time for lunch at a local restaurant.
