There is a walk through Prague that covers more history per metre than almost anywhere in Europe. It begins at a medieval city gate, passes through one of the continent's most beautiful squares, and ends on a 14th-century stone bridge with a view that stops everyone in their tracks. This is our Charles Bridge and Old Town walking tour — two hours, private guide, just your group.
The Powder Tower and the Royal Route
The tour begins at the Powder Tower — one of the original 13 city gates of medieval Prague, built in 1475. This is where the Royal Route begins: the ceremonial path along which Czech kings processed from the Old Town to Prague Castle on their coronation day. Standing beneath its Gothic arch, you are standing exactly where Bohemian kings stood for centuries.
From here your guide leads you through the Old Town — one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe, where the street layout has barely changed in 700 years. Every façade tells a story. Every corner has a legend. And most visitors walk past them without knowing any of it.
Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock
Old Town Square is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe — and one of the most historically layered. The square has witnessed coronations, executions, markets and revolutions. At its centre stands the Jan Hus monument; on one side, the twin-towered Týn Church; and on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall, the Astronomical Clock.
The Orloj has been running since 1410 — over 600 years of continuous operation. Every hour, on the hour, the figures of the Apostles parade past the two small windows above the clock face. Your guide will explain what you are actually looking at — because the Astronomical Clock is far more than a clock, and most visitors have no idea what the four dials actually measure.
And then there is the dark story of the clockmaker — the legend that the City Council, fearing he would build a rival clock elsewhere, had him blinded after he completed his masterpiece. Whether true or not, it is one of Prague's most enduring stories.
Charles Bridge
From Old Town Square your guide leads you through the medieval lanes to Charles Bridge — the most iconic crossing in Central Europe, commissioned by Emperor Charles IV in 1357 and completed in the early 15th century. The bridge is lined with 30 Baroque statues of saints, added from 1683 onwards. Each one has a story. Your guide will show you the one that matters most: the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, patron saint of Bohemia and its bridges, whose bronze plaque has been touched by so many hands over so many centuries that it gleams gold. Touch it, make a wish — and join a tradition that has been going on for hundreds of years.
Standing on Charles Bridge, the view opens in both directions. To the west: Prague Castle rising above the red rooftops of Malá Strana, reflected in the Vltava below. To the east: the Old Town skyline, its towers and spires against the sky. Below: the river itself, with its weirs and swans and riverboats. This is the view that appears on every photograph of Prague. Standing here in person is something else entirely.
