There is a moment when you arrive in Karlovy Vary and the valley opens up before you — pastel colonnades lining the river, forested hills rising on every side, steam drifting from the springs — and you understand immediately why half of Europe's most distinguished visitors spent their summers here for five centuries. This is not a tourist attraction. It is a way of life, preserved in amber.
A private Karlovy Vary day trip from Prague takes you to Europe's most famous spa town — known historically as Karlsbad and still referred to that way across much of the German-speaking world. UNESCO-listed as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, it is one of those places that fully lives up to its reputation.
The list of people who came to Karlsbad reads like a history of European civilisation. Goethe visited thirteen times. Beethoven, Chopin, Paganini, Casanova, Peter the Great and Karl Marx all came here for the same thing: twelve thermal springs rising from a depth of 2,000 metres, each with a different mineral composition, each with a different reputed effect on the body.
Legend has it that Emperor Charles IV discovered the springs in the 14th century while out hunting deer — his horse's leg was healed by the hot water, and he ordered a town to be built on the spot. Whether true or not, the town that grew here became synonymous with elegance, health and social standing for half a millennium.
Today Karlovy Vary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the atmosphere — a city that built itself entirely around the idea of unhurried, elegant pleasure — is exactly what draws people here still.
The Mill Colonnade is the architectural centrepiece of the town — a 132-metre neoclassical structure supported by 124 Corinthian columns, built between 1871 and 1881 by the same architect who designed the Rudolfinum in Prague. Five hot springs flow inside it. Most visitors spend an hour here and feel they could stay all day.
The Vřídlo Geyser is the most dramatic of the twelve springs — shooting water up to 12 metres into the air at a temperature of 72 degrees. The hottest, the most powerful, and the one that stops everyone in their tracks.
The Becherovka Museum tells the story of the legendary Czech herbal liqueur produced here since 1807 to a secret recipe known only to two people in the world. Often called the 13th spring of Karlovy Vary, it is as much a symbol of the town as the colonnades themselves.
The Diana Tower gives you Karlovy Vary from above — accessible by funicular through the forest, or on foot via a hiking trail. The panorama over the valley is one of those views that stays with you.
Karlovy Vary wafers are not a tourist souvenir. They are a genuine local tradition with centuries of history — thin, crispy, warm from the shop, eaten while walking the colonnades.

Every July, Karlsbad transforms. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival — one of the most important in Europe — fills the town with actors, directors and film enthusiasts. The iconic Grandhotel Pupp, which appeared in Daniel Craig's Casino Royale as the Hotel Splendide in Montenegro, becomes the centre of everything. If you visit in July, the town will be especially festive. In any other season it will be quieter, more elegant and entirely yours.
The springs look like taps in a wall until someone explains what you are drinking, where the water comes from and why the mineral composition of each one is different. The colonnades look like beautiful architecture until someone shows you which spring Goethe stood at, which hotel Beethoven stayed in and why the town is laid out the way it is. Context transforms a pleasant day out into something that actually stays with you.

Can you drink the water from the thermal springs? Yes — and you should. The water from all twelve springs is freely available. Traditional porcelain cups with a long spout are sold throughout the town; they are designed specifically for drinking hot mineral water comfortably and make an excellent souvenir.
What is Becherovka and where does it come from? Becherovka is a Czech herbal liqueur produced in Karlovy Vary since 1807 to a secret recipe known only to two people. Often called the 13th spring of Karlovy Vary, it is one of the best-known Czech spirits in the world.
What is the best time to visit Karlovy Vary? Spring and autumn are ideal — mild weather, fewer crowds, the colonnades at their most atmospheric. July brings the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Winter is Karlsbad's best kept secret: almost empty colonnades, steam rising from the hot springs into cold air, and a silence that makes the whole place feel like it belongs to you.
